Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year DragonChinese New Year is probably one of the most well events in China, and although the celebration is reproduced in most every country, you really haven't seen a Chinese New Year celebration until you've seen it in China.

If you can swing it, Chinese New Year is an event not to be missed. Of course it is during winter in China, so you may just need to resort to visiting the nearest Chinatown.

Chinese New Year is THE most important Chinese holiday. It is also known as the Chinese Lunar New Year and known as the Chinese Spring Festival. So, when does it happen? Chinese New Year falls on the first day of the first lunar month according to the Chinese calendar. It lasts until the fifteenth 15th day of the month, which is the day of the magnificent Chinese lantern festival. So, to simplify the dates of the Chinese New Year, it always starts somewhere between January 21 and February 20. This is usually the 2nd new moon after the winter solstice.

If you are visiting China at Chinese New Year, remember to wear Red and not Black. Red is believed to scare aware bad fortune and evil spirits. Black, on the other hand, is superstitiously thought of as bad luck.
